Rain brings relief to water-starved Gujarat

After playing truant for most of July, it rained in almost all the 33 districts of Gujarat in the last 24 hours with the water-starved northern areas recording heavy showers. The rest of the state received light to moderate rainfall.

According to the MeT Department, all 198 talukas witnessed rainfall till 6 p.m. on Monday due to three atmospheric systems. The state is likely to witness rain for the next four days, which will be a huge relief to farmers.

While Vav in the Banaskatha district recorded the highest 230 mm rain in the past 24 hours, Tharad received 171 mm, Deodar 102 mm and Umerpada in the Surat district 100 mm. As many as 168 talukas received rain till Monday morning.

Kaprada in Valsad recorded 128 mm, followed by Mangrol in Surat at 110 mm, Umerpada 103 mm, Dharampur in the Vaslad district 96 mm, Waghai 92 mm, Ahwa 90 mm, Ankleshwar 89 mm, Walai 85 mm and Netrang 82 mm. All these are in South Gujarat, which traditionally receives good rainfall.

Bavla in the Ahmedabad district recorded 75 mm and Abdasa in the water-starved Kutch district 30 mm. Ahmedabad city recorded 9 mm rain.

Dams and rivers have been receiving fresh water inflows. IANS
