With Rahul Gandhi’s Vote Chori campaign making headlines, a recent investigative report by Bhaskar English that exposed large-scale voter list fraud in Madhya Pradesh, revealing suspicious entries and fake addresses across urban and rural areas, has caught the attention of the nation.
The report highlights cases from Bhopal, Gwalior, and other parts of the state, showing that “1,696 addresses across Madhya Pradesh have more than 50 voters each.” According to the State Election Commission data cited in the article, “917 of these addresses are in municipal areas and the rest in rural panchayats.”

One example comes from House No. 10 in Barela village, Lal Ghati, Bhopal, which officially lists 19 voters, including names such as Rajesh Modi, Mukesh Yogi, Mohammad Afsar Ali, and Sakina. But as the Bhaskar English ground report found, “only two Muslim families” actually live there. Shahnaz Ali, one of the residents, said her family has been living in the house for over 30 years and she does not know the others listed.

In another case, House No. 64 in Karariya village, under the Govindpura area, has 40 registered voters. The list contains names from multiple communities, yet, as resident Asharam Mali told the publication, about 20 people in his extended family live there, and others with the same address actually reside in adjacent buildings without separate house numbers.

In Nayapura, Bhopal North constituency, House No 100 lists 36 voters. The report says Bhaskar’s visit found only “11 genuine voters from the Yadav family,” while others, like Arvind Sharma, live elsewhere in the locality.

The scale of the problem is significant. According to data analysed with software from MP State Electronic Development Corporation, the Commission flagged “7.95 lakh addresses with up to 20 voters each, 2,354 addresses with 41–50 voters, and 1,696 addresses with over 50 voters.”

Gwalior tops the list of suspicious addresses, with more than 16,000 anomalies. “At least 158 addresses in Gwalior have more than 50 voters,” the report states, followed by Indore and Bhopal.

State Election Commission Secretary Abhishek Singh told Bhaskar English: “The voter list is dynamic and regularly updated. Errors do occur and are corrected through major revisions every 1–2 years.” He confirmed that physical verification was underway to remove fake and duplicate entries.

According to the report, the mistakes in the voter list are spread across the state and are more serious in towns and cities. Opposition leaders have urged for immediate rectification of the mistakes, while the Election Commission says it is sending teams to verify voters at their homes.- TWL Bureau
