Makkal Mandram may be attacked, plead activists
12-December-2012
In a statement issued to the media, the Kanchipuram based Makkal Mandram, an organization working for Dalits and Tribals, has alleged that Paatali Makkal Katchi (PMK) activists made violent threats, including that of rape, against the women activists of Makkal Mandram at a meeting outside the Kanchipuram Collectorate this morning.
The statement said speakers at the meeting had accused Makkal Mandram of indulging in Katta Panchayats (kangaroo courts) and had asked the district collector to ban the organization.
“Some speakers exhorted a mob to go and attack the Makkal Mandram commune,” the statement said.
“Later this evening, around 6.30 pm several shirtless youths were seen roaming on motor bikes close to our commune. Many strangers have been making their way to our village today. They glare at our people or make threatening gestures. We have young children in our commune. They are affected by these intimidations,” the statement issued by Mahesh, Jessy and Geeta of Makkal Mandram said.
Kanchipuram, which is about 70 from Chennai, is reportedly tense following the murder of a Dalit leader belonging to Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi who was hacked to death on Sunday. His funeral was held yesterday in Kanchipuram. – TWL Bureau
