Mexican actress Yalitza Aparicio, who debuted in Alfonso Cuaron's 2018 drama "Roma" which also earned her an Oscar nomination, has been named as a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Indigenous Peoples on Friday.

The 25-year-old actress has lent her support to the United Nations campaign, "I say no to racism!"

TIME magazine has listed her as one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2019.

In a Friday statement, UNESCO said she is committed to the fight against racism and for the rights of women and indigenous peoples.

"Aparicio will contribute to UNESCO's work to ensure the integration of indigenous peoples everywhere and the realization of their rights, through the safeguard and celebration of indigenous cultural heritage, the inclusion of indigenous knowledge in environmental management, the preservation of biodiversity, adaptation to climate change, and equal access to education for indigenous peoples," it said.

UNESCO Goodwill ambassadors are personalities who place their fame at the service of the organisation's campaigns. They commit to raise public awareness of the organisation's mission for a period of two years.IANS
