People across Tamil Nadu are voicing strong opposition to the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Many have condemned the exercise as unnecessary and counterproductive.
According to widespread public opinion, the revision drive is seen as creating confusion and undermining voter confidence in the electoral system.

“It’s absurd,” said a voter from Chennai. “Even if your name is on the Election Commission’s list and you have supporting government documents like Aadhaar, you are still not considered a valid voter unless you complete this new procedure.”

As per the current SIR process, field agents are tasked with distributing a new form by visiting households door-to-door. They are expected to return later to collect the completed forms, which are then submitted to the Election Commission for re-verification.

Only after the data is reprocessed and uploaded will individuals be treated as eligible voters, according to officials.

Residents have questioned the logic behind re-verifying unchanged details and expressed concern that the entire exercise is turning into a bureaucratic bottleneck.

“This is not just about paperwork. This whole exercise appears to shaking public confidence in a system that is meant to ensure democratic participation,” a voter rights advocate remarked.

Many are urging the Tamil Nadu government to reconsider the continuation of the SIR drive, calling it a wasteful procedure that could hinder rather than enhance electoral participation.

Citizens hope that the Tamil Nadu government will put an end to this futile exercise, which is making a mockery of our electoral system and the vibrant democratic traditions that India is known for.

The DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA) has announced protests across all districts of Tamil Nadu on November 11 against the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists.

In a joint statement, the alliance said the revision is being done in an unfair and one-sided way, ignoring objections from several parties. They claimed the move is politically motivated to remove minority and anti-BJP voters from the rolls. - TWL Bureau
