Human rights should be taught in schools: President
10-December-2012
President Pranab Mukherjee Monday urged introduction of human rights as a subject in school syllabus for increasing awareness on the issue.
"We must increase awareness for human rights by including it as a subject in school curriculum. A human rights culture should infuse our national consciousness," he said at an event to mark the 64th World Human Rights Day here.
The president also stressed upon translating laws and constitutional provisions into reality for the common man, warning that denial of equality in social and economic life could affect continuance of political democracy.
"How long shall we continue to deny equality in our social and economic life? If we continue to deny it for long, we will do so only by putting our political democracy in peril," he said.
"We must remove this contradiction at the earliest possible moment, else those who suffer from inequality will blow up the structure of democracy which our Constituent Assembly has so laboriously built up," Mukherjee said. - IANS
