Dalit magazine to create corpus fund
14-November-2012
A 15-year-old Tamil monthly magazine ‘Dalit Murasu,’ known for its fiercely independent editorial stand on Dalit issues, is in urgent need of funds to continue its publication.
Edited by M Punitha Pandian, the magazine has a circulation of about 10,000 copies. Committed to the welfare of Dalits, the publication had steadfastly refused to toe the line of Dalit political parties and even criticized them for not doing enough for the Dalit cause.
In the absence of any political funding, the magazine was being brought out through revenue from reader subscriptions.
A group of writers and journalists are now trying to create a corpus fund to run the magazine, which has not been coming out since April.
To raise funds, the group is staging a Tamil play ‘Molagaapodi’ based on a novel of the same name by Dalit writer Baama at Chennai on November 16 at Egmore Museum Theatre.
