Internet services suspended in Odisha town

The Odisha government on Wednesday suspended internet services in Kendrapara town for 48 hours to prevent communal tension after an objectionable video targeting a particular community was posted on social media.
The Chief Minister's Office (CMO) informed about the restraining orders on the use of internet, which came into effect from 3 p.m. for the next 48 hours.
The action came in the wake of a recommendation from Kendrapara district administration following tension in the town over the social media post.
People from the community met the district collector and demanded steps to prevent a 'Bhadrak' like situation.
Collector Muralidhar Mallick said the internet services have been suspended in the town so that the post does not spread.
Meanwhile, police personnel have been deployed in Kendrapara to prevent any untoward incidents.
"Many people belonging to a particular community gathered in protest against the objectionable post. Internet services were disabled to prevent the posting from going viral," said Kendrapara Superintendent of Police Dayanidhi Gochayat.
He said three platoons of police have been deployed to maintain law and order in the town.
On April 6, communal tensions erupted in Bhadrak city following derogatory remarks against Hindu gods being posted on social media. While police have arrested over 150 persons over the incident, the town is still under night curfew as normalcy is yet to be fully restored. - IANS
