A special CBI court here on Thursday sent, to six days agency custody, Noida Authority's former chief engineer Yadav Singh who has been arrested in an ongoing probe into alleged abuse of his official position in awarding contracts and thus causing wrongful loss to the exchequer.

The Central Bureau of Investigation, who arrested Yadav Singh on Wednesday, produced him in the court of Special Judge G. Sridevi here, seeking 14 days custody.

Defence counsel Amit Khemka pleaded that the Uttar Pradesh Police had already closed up the case after a proper investigation but the court didn't agree and sent Singh to 6 days CBI custody as it adjourned the hearing for February 10.

The CBI had registered a case on July 30, 2015 against Singh and other unknown people under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Prevention of Corruption Act for alleged corrupt practices in laying of underground cable worth Rs.9,202 lakh (approx) and other allegations, following an order dated July 16 by the Lucknow Bench of Allahabad High Court.

Earlier the Uttar Pradesh Police had registered an FIR in Noida on June 13, 2012, alleging that Singh, then chief engineer, NOIDA/Greater NOIDA & Yamuna Expressway Authority had entered into criminal conspiracy with unknown private persons/firms and awarded various contracts without following the laid down procedures and thereby caused undue pecuniary gains to the tune of crores of rupees to private firms and himself.

The FIR ended in closure and a final report filed in the court of special session judge, Noida in January and accepted by the court in November 2014. - IANS
