Kerala assembly to go green

The Kerala government will install a rainwater harvesting plant, a waste water treatment plant and solar panels as part of an initiative to turn the state assembly complex green, Speaker G. Karthikeyan said Thursday.

"The 1.5 million rainwater harvesting plant will be set up at six places in and around the assembly complex at an estimated cost of Rs.6 million. The project will be ready in a month's time," Karthikeyan told reporters here.

"The tender for installing 400 KW of solar panels will be floated soon, and the total cost is expected to be around Rs.16 crore," he added.

The speaker said the waste water treatment plant was expected to treat around 75,000 litres every day, which would be used in assembly complex toilets and for watering plants in the garden.

"We have also decided to replace all the old bulbs and tube lights with more efficient lighting systems to save around 10,688 units of electricity every month," Karthikeyan added. - IANS
