Law college students on indefinite fast for Eelam
13-March-2013
Students from various law colleges in Tamil Nadu have joined the protests demanding India’s support for creating a separate Tamil nation through a UN supervised referendum.
In Chennai, about 10 students from Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University are sitting on an indefinite fast seeking a UN referendum, an independent international investigation into war crimes of the Sri Lankan government, and enforcement of economic sanctions against Sri Lanka.

S Muthukrishnan, a PG law student, said eight students have been fasting since Monday and two others joined them yesterday.
One of them is a female student, whose mother tongue is Telugu, he said. She has joined the protesters moved by the plight of Sri Lankan Tamils.
The protesters spent the night in the open in pitch darkness with just a couple of candles to throw some light. The college management had shut the main gate leaving the students with no access to the toilets inside the premises.
But students said they were prepared for a long haul. “We know that these demands cannot be met overnight. We are gearing for a long struggle. If health condition of any of the students deteriorates, then we plan to remove the person from the fast and put a replacement,” said Muthukrishnan.
Political leaders including Pazha Nedumaran and Nallakannu have called on the students and expressed their solidarity with them.
