Vijay’s Madurai Show Draws Lakhs, But Aftermath Tells A Mixed Story
26-August-2025

Actor Vijay, leader of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), recently organised a massive party conference in Madurai that drew lakhs of supporters from across Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
The rally, which was billed as TVK’s biggest show of strength so far, created a wave of excitement among his fans and cadres, positioning his party as a serious force ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. Supporters shouted slogans like “Stalin uncle, hear the noise of the people,” and the turnout was seen as a strong signal that Vijay’s star power had translated into political momentum.
In his address, Vijay marked a clear political stand, criticising both the DMK and the BJP. He positioned TVK not as an alternative but as a primary force that could take on the ruling party in the state.
His speech focused on themes such as justice, inclusivity, social progress, and integrity, promising a politics that would uphold dignity and fairness. Symbolism and star appeal were on full display, with cultural performances, a dramatic ramp walk, the hoisting of the party flag, and tributes to ideological figures that left a strong impression on the crowd.
However, the event also exposed several weaknesses. The scorching heat, lack of proper crowd management, and poor arrangements for shade, water, and medical support created serious problems. Around a hundred people collapsed due to exhaustion, and ambulances were kept busy throughout the day.
Tragically, one supporter lost his life on the way to the rally, with reports suggesting either a heart attack or fainting brought on by the conditions. Despite arrangements for lakhs of water bottles and volunteers on the ground, the demand overwhelmed the system. Barricades were breached, confusion spread at entry points, and even internet disruptions added to the struggle of attendees trying to buy food or water.
Political rivals also used the shortcomings to attack Vijay. DMK leaders said his remarks were insulting to senior politicians, while AIADMK leaders dismissed the hype around TVK, arguing that the party would fade away by the next election and insisting that only AIADMK remained the real challenger to the DMK.
For observers, the Madurai conference highlighted both sides of Vijay’s political entry: his ability to mobilise massive crowds and inspire them with clear messaging, but also the organisational and safety lapses that showed the gap between star power and efficient political machinery. - TWL Bureau
