NEP Sparks Hindi Imposition Debate in TN
21-February-2025

The three-language issue in Tamil Nadu has flared up again after a statement from the Union Minister of Education about fund allocation under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The Minister said that funds would be given only to states that implement the three-language formula, which has led to strong opposition from political parties and student groups in Tamil Nadu.
Tamil Nadu has always followed a two-language policy and has consistently opposed making Hindi a compulsory subject in schools. The state government, along with the Dravidian parties, has once again made it clear that they are against the three-language system, calling it an attempt to push Hindi onto non-Hindi-speaking states.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin strongly opposed Pradhan’s statement, stating that the people of the state would not accept such threats. He warned that if the state is denied funds for its education programme, the Centre would have to face the strong resolve of the Tamil people.
State Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu also questioned the Centre’s approach, pointing out that Tamil Nadu contributes 9% to the country’s GDP without any conditions and asking why restrictions should be placed when the state receives its rightful share. – TWL Bureau
