Tamil Nadu Anti-Corruption Unit Nabs ED Official for Demanding Bribe from Doctor
02-December-2023

In a significant development, the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) in Tamil Nadu apprehended an officer from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for alleged bribery in Dindigul.
Ankit Tiwari, serving in the Madurai office of the Union Government's Enforcement Department, was caught receiving a bribe of Rs. 20 lakh from a government doctor.
The incident unfolded when Tiwari contacted the doctor, threatening to reopen an old case and demanding a hefty sum to avoid legal action.
According to DVAC, initially, Tiwari demanded Rs. 3 crore but later agreed to accept Rs. 51 lakh, of which Rs. 20 lakh was received as the first installment.
The doctor, growing suspicious of Tiwari's actions, filed a complaint with the Dindigul district Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Unit. Acting on the complaint, DVAC officials arrested Tiwari on Friday, as he received the bribe money.
He was detained under the Prevention of Corruption Act at 10.30 a.m.
Investigations are ongoing to determine if Tiwari used similar tactics to extort money from other officials and to ascertain if other ED officials were involved in the scheme.
Searches are being conducted at Tiwari's residence and his office in Madurai. Later in the evening, Tiwari was remanded by a court. - TWL Bureau
