American retail chain Walmart announced unprecedented salary hike for its truck drivers following recent reports about shortage of drivers in the country.
The average starting salary for a long haul driver is $56,491. Walmart’s starting wage can nearly double, the company stated, adding that Walmart drivers can earn up to $110,000 in their first year (about Rs 82 lakh per annum).
The American Trucking Associations had estimated that there was a shortage of about 80,000 divers in the country.
“Our approximately 12,000 drivers are deeply dedicated to safety and professionalism, and today, we’re proud to announce pay raises to ensure Walmart remains one of the best companies in the world to drive for.
“These latest investments mean Walmart drivers can now make up to $110,000 in their first year with the company. And that’s just a start – drivers who have been with Walmart longer can earn even more, based on factors like tenure and location,” the company said
The company has also announced a driver training program. – TWL Bureau
