A policeman was killed when Maoists opened indiscriminate fire on him at a function on Thursday in Maharashtra's Gadchiroli district to mark the 125th birth anniversary of B.R. Ambedkar, the architect of Indian Constitution, police said.
The attack came at the function which was addressed by former Maharashtra legislator Deepak Atram in Mauje Chhallewada village in Gadchiroli.
His police bodyguard, Nanaji B. Nagose, who was posted on duty near the stage, was suddenly accosted by six heavily-armed Maoists who fired at several rounds at him before fleeing into the nearby jungles.
The seriously-injured Nagose was rushed by a helicopter to Gadchiroli but succumbed during treatment at the district civil hospital.
His last rites were conducted later in Gadchiroli with full state honours in the presence of top police and civil officials. - IANS
