The Indian Institute of Management-Indore (IIM-I) will now give lessons in policing to the UP Police and ensure an improvement in the policing system.

A 12-member team from IIM-Indore, headed by its director, Prof Himanshu Rai, is visiting the UP police headquarters on Wednesday to chalk out an action plan.

The development comes a month after UP police and IIM-Indore signed an MoU for a period of five years in January.

This is for the first time that an IIM team is assisting a police force in rendering better services.

IIM-Indore will also impart psychological training to cops below gazetted rank officials to work out ways to not only improve their productivity but also suggest ways to reduce stress.

Prof Himanshu Rai told reporters that the IIM team would work with UP police to strengthen beat system, patrolling by UP-112 vehicles, and traffic management in five cities of Uttar Pradesh."

"In the first lap on Wednesday, professors will hold preliminary meetings with officials concerned and then initiate work by coordinating with senior IPS officers," he said.

According to the sources, three senior IPS officers will work in close coordination with the team of experts to improve overall policing. ADG (law and order) P.V. Ramasastry will look after beat policing while ADG UP 112 Asim Arun and IG (traffic) Deepak Ratan will work to improve patrolling of UP 112 vehicles and traffic management, respectively.

Asim Arun, who is also the nodal head of the project, said integration between the IIM and police would bring change in overall performance of the police force.

"For beat policing, apps will be developed and digital record of cops and their interface with public will be maintained. Innovative and cost-effective ways of patrolling will also be explored," he said.

As part of traffic plan, the team will look at ways to improve traffic in Ghaziabad, Lucknow, Gautam Buddha Nagar, Kanpur and Varanasi.

Sources said that for Lucknow, IIM-Indore has been asked to prepare a VIP route from the congested Charbagh to 5, Kalidas Marg to ensure that traffic is not disturbed during any VIP movement.-IANS
