Govt eyeing rich medal haul in Paris, Los Angeles Olympics

The government is giving special focus on 13 sporting disciplines to assure a stellar performance by India in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, Kiren Rijiju, said on Monday.
In a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha, the minister informed the House that the disciplines selected under the 'Target Olympic Podium Scheme' (TOPS) include athletics, archery, badminton, boxing, hockey, weightlifting, shooting, wrestling, swimming, table tennis, rowing, judo and cycling.
He also stated that under TOPS, the government is extending support to the probable athletes identified for the 2024 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.
The support components include foreign training, international competition, equipment, services of support staff, sports psychologist, mental trainer and physiotherapist besides a monthly pocket allowance of Rs 50,000.
Rijiju stated that similar focus is being given to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, for which an additional discipline, fencing, has been added.
