After the Supreme Court order to the administration of the UT of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) to assess all its restrictive orders on Internet use, Twitter was flooded with #internetshutdown, #SupremeCourt hashtags trending on the Internet.
The Supreme Court on Friday directed the administration of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir to view all its restrictive orders within a week and publish them publicly for them to be raised before a court of law.
The apex court in its ruling observed that the use of Internet enjoys constitutional protection as a tool, which is under the ambit of freedom of speech and expression and also enables people to carry on with their respective professions.
Twitterati hailed the Supreme Court order on the Internet ban in J&K. A user on the mcro-blogging site wrote, "Court's decision on Right to Internet in Kashmir is like - You see breathing is a right. And you have cut off oxygen for 5 months, so take another week, to review if patient needs oxygen to survive & then we shall decide. The patient keeps gasping, meanwhile."
"The verdict on #internetshutdown is important today as it assesses the constitutionality of one. Even though the SC has ruled that #InternetShutdowns cannot be indefinite, it has allowed the loophole that it must be considered by the State only if "necessary" & "unavoidable", added another.
A Tweeple remarked, "Love whenever the judgments begin with literary references, #internetshutdown judgment begins with Charles Dickens's quote, "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times." Reminds of David Rakoff half empty, "We were so happy. It was miserable."IANS
