Bengal CM announces welfare scheme for kendu leaf collectors

The West Bengal government has decided to introduce a social security scheme for the tribal kendu leaf collectors in three districts, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said on Friday.
Targeted at the tribal kendu leaf collectors of West Midnapore, Bankura and Purulia districts, the beneficiaries under the scheme will be entitled to compensation for accidental and natural death, partial or permanent disability and medical assistance among other things.
Tribals between 18 and 60 years of age can apply for registration free of cost.
Upon registration, the beneficiaries will be entitled to a lump sum amount of Rs.50,000 to Rs.150,000 on attaining 60 years of age.
They will also be entitled to a compensation of Rs.150,000 for accidental death and Rs.50,000 for natural death, Rs.4,000 for partial disability and Rs.25,000 for permanent disability.
Medical assistance to a maximum of Rs.4,000 per annum and Rs.80,000 for a block of four years would also be provided in case of surgery.
Besides maternity benefit of Rs.6,000 up to two children and a one time assistance for funeral expenses of Rs.3,000 would also be provided to the beneficiaries. - IANS
