TRS woman MLA describes 'encounter' killings as sad

A woman legislator of Telangana's ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) has triggered a row by describing as 'sad' the gunning down of all the four accused in a veterinarian's gang-rape and murder by the police in an alleged exchange of fire.

Speaking at a programme at Aleru in her Assembly constituency in Yadadari Bhongir district, Gongidi Sunitha conveyed her sympathy to the parents of the four youth killed in the police 'encounter' on December 6 at Chatanpally near Shadnagar town.

"What happened to the girl was sad and the killing of four youth is also said. Just imagine the pain the parents of the these youth are going through," she said.

A video clipping of TRS MLA's remarks went viral on the social media. Her stand is in complete disagreement with that of state ministers and other leaders, who hailed the police action.

Couple of ministers even stated that Telangana emerged as a role model in ensuring 'instant justice' to the victim.

While many people welcomed the 'encounter', saying justice was done to the victim, some termed it as staged/managed. Few rights groups have described the killings of the accused as 'extra-judicial' killings and approached the court, seeking a thorough probe.

The police claimed that the accused, all in their 20s, were killed in an exchange of fire. According to the police, the accused attacked the police party which had taken them to Chatanpally for recreating the crime scene. Two of the accused allegedly snatched weapons from the police and opened fire. All four died in retaliatory fire by the police.

The accused -- two lorry drivers and two cleaners -- had allegedly gang-raped and throttled a 26-year-old veterinarian at Shamshabad on the outskirts of Hyderabad on the intervening night of November 27 and 28. They burnt the body of the victim near Shadnagar, about 50 km from Hyderabad.IANS
