SC to hear Govindacharya's plea on live streaming hearings

New Delhi

05-December-2019

The Supreme Court on Thursday agreed to hear a plea by former RSS ideologue K.N. Govindacharya seeking live streaming of the hearing of petitions challenging the revocation of Article 370.

Senior advocate Vikas Singh appearing for Govindacharya said the plea had been filed two weeks ago but was yet to be listed for hearing. He mentioned the plea for early listing before a Bench of Chief Justice S.A. Bobde and Justices B.R. Gavai and Surya Kant.

Singh said the five-judge Constitution Bench is scheduled to begin hearing the matter on December 10.

In his plea Govindacharya said the Registry didn't comply with the court order on submitting a report for live streaming of the Ayodhya hearing, and the hearing was wrapped up.

The apex court in September 2018 had ruled for live streaming of cases of national importance. Govindacharya had filed a plea for its implementation. He insisted that transparency and accountability would be emboldened through live streaming.

"It's submitted that this matter is a momentous matter, whose proceedings can be considered to be live streamed/video recorded/audio recorded/transcripted on a pilot basis," he said, citing the petitions challenging the revocation of Article 370 as a matter of importance and covered by domestic and international media.IANS
