Kerala celebrates its 63rd formation day

As Kerala turned 63 on Friday, people were celebrating the foundation day with gaiety and pomp.
Known as 'Kerala Piravi' in local parlance, this is one day when the traditional Kerala attire is worn by all in the state, irrespective of religion, caste or creed. The women wear the traditional Kerala saree and the men donned the "dhothi (mundu)".
The Kerala Assembly, which is in session these days, saw almost all, whether MLAs or staff, show up in the traditional attire. Similar scenes were witnessed in the IT campuses and the Kochi Infopark campus.
Kerala Piravi marks the birth of the state of Kerala in India. The state of Kerala was created on November 1, 1956, after the merger of Travancore-Cochin state with the Malabar district of Madras State and Kasaragod of South Canara (Dakshina Kannada).
Modern Kerala is divided into 14 districts with Thiruvananthapuram as the state capital.
Even as the celebrations were going on, former Mizoram Governor and Bharatiya Janata Party leader, Kummanem Rajasekheran staged a protest, demanding a CBI probe into the 'murder' of two minor girls in 2017 at Palakkad, after the court acquitted all the five accused for want of evidence last week.IANS
