16-September-2019
With the arrest of three persons, including two women, in Northwest Delhi's Subhash Place area, the Delhi Police claimed to have busted a gang of extortionists who cheated people impersonating as Crime Branch officers.
The accused have been identified as Jyoti (33), Deepak Kumar (33) -- wife and husband, resident of Ghaziabad, UP -- and Poonam Sethi (43), a resident of Shahdara Delhi.
According to DCP (Northwest) Vijayanta Arya, on Sunday a person complained that some people were trying to extort money from him by impersonating as Crime Branch officers.
The trio were threatening him to tarnish his reputation if he didn't pay Rs 5 lakh. They were arrested from the office of S.R. Jewellers at Pearls Omaxe Plaza Tower in Netaji Subhash Place.
On questioning, Deepak revealed that he was going through some financial issues in the past few months. He came in contact with Poonam through social media and entered the world of crime. Deepak shared his plans with wife Jyoti, a post-graduate from Allahabad University and mother of two. She also took to the crime.
Poonam would blackmail people using the name of her NGO -- National Crime Intelligence Bureau -- and by impersonating as Crime Branch officers.
