Karnataka additional advocate general Devadatt Kamat resigns

New Delhi

24-July-2019

Karnataka's Additional Advocate General Devadatt Kamat on Wednesday tendered his resignation from his post.

Kamat's resignation came a day after the head of the Janata Dal (Secular)-Congress coalition, H.D. Kumaraswamy resigned as Karnataka Chief Minister on losing the trust vote in the Assembly on the confidence motion.

In a letter to Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala, Kamat said that he was privileged to serve as Additional Advocate General in the Supreme Court since 2015.

"However, due to personal reasons, I wish to tender my resignation from the post of Additional Advocate General," he said in the letter.

Kamat, designated as Senior Advocate in March 2019, has appeared in several high profile matters of Karnataka.

Among them was a midnight hearing in the Supreme Court in May last year where he appeared for the Congress and sought direction to hold a floor test in Karnataka Assembly.

During the recent crisis, he represented the Speaker and contended before the top court that the Speaker was constitutionally bound to first take up the disqualification proceedings.IANS
