Rajasthan Assembly rocked over rape incidents

The Rajasthan Assembly was rocked on Monday over two incidents of rape of minor girls as politicians traded charges over the crime situation in the state capital.

BJP MLA from Sanganer Ashok Lahoti attacked the state government accusing it of negligence.

"Two girls aged seven and four were raped within nine days and the accused remained out of reach for seven continuous days. However, the Chief Minister of the state travelled to Delhi innumerable times to please his party chief, with no time for state-related issues," said Lahoti, adding that it was shameful for the entire state as the victims were raped in the Rajasthan capital.

The accused named Jivaanu, who is said to be involved in several cases of rape and molestation, was finally arrested following an undeclared curfew-like situation in the city as angry protesters took to the streets and vandalised vehicles over the incidents.

Congress MLA Pratap Khachriyawas accused Lahoti of politicising the issue. Many other MLAs stood up with him and Assembly proceedings were adjourned for some 40 minutes. However things calmed down with the intervention of speaker C.P. Joshi.

The rape accused was produced in court on Monday after being arrested from Kota on Saturday.

As he was being taken to court, the public thrashed him despite presence of the police and demanded that he be handed over to them.

Police officials said the accused is a regular sexual predator who was continuously hunting for victims. He has molested around 40 men and transgenders and 25 minor boys and girls, they added.

Police said the accused (34) was arrested for the first time in 2001 on theft charges when he was a minor. In 2004, he drowned a minor in a water tank after molesting the boy. He was given a life term in this case, however, he was out in 2015 on bail on false grounds of getting married.

Even after being on bail, he continued with his acts of eve-teasing and molesting minors. He was again caught redhanded while molesting girls and had also previously attacked the police and fled.

He has around 12 cases registered against him and has been to jail six times, police said.IANS
