Javadekar hails DTH, cable networks, hands out STBs
22-June-2019
Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Prakash Javadekar has said DTH (direct-to-home) and cable networks have revolutionised dissemination of information, education and entertainment.
Speaking at an event, here on Saturday, organised for free distribution of Doordarshan set top boxes (STBs) among the border residents of Jammu and Kashmir, Javadekar appreciated the efforts of the I&B Ministry, especially Doordarshan, for reaching out to the people in the border areas to disseminate information, education and entertainment.
Stating that after basic necessities, information and entertainment are the most important needs of the people, he said the central government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is taking all steps to ensure these facilities to people.
The credibility of Doordarshan and AIR allowed them an edge over others who sometimes got carried away by rumours, he said and added, "Doordarshan is an institution of trust."
During the event, held at Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Centre on the banks of Dal Lake, Minister of State in PMO Jitendra Singh launched a spectrum of initiatives for J&K.
A half-an-hour Dogri programme and news bulletin, to be telecast by DD Kashmir, and the signature tune of the channel were also launched on the occasion.
"The launch of Dogri programme and news bulletin will go a long way in bringing sense of pride and oneness among the people," he said, terming Doordarshan as the only channel that can bring hearts together.
Governor Satya Pal Malik said the people living in border areas would surely benefit from this initiative. "The problems of J&K youth need to be addressed to bring in peace and prosperity in the region," he said.
He urged Doordarshan and AIR to keep spreading out to the remotest of corners to provide information. IANS
