At least one person was killed and another seriously injured on Friday in a shooting near an iconic square in the Austrian capital, officials said.
The police said on Twitter that the shooting took place at around 1.30 p.m. in the Lugeck area, some 100 metres away from the Stephansplatz Square in the city centre.
The shooter was yet to be apprehended, Efe news reported.
"A search is currently underway. Further details remain unclear," the police said.
Police officials added that search operations were being conducted throughout the entire city and that people uninvolved in the incident were not in danger, implying that the shooting was not being treated as a terror attack.
The Austrian tabloid Kronenzeitung claimed that the shooting took place inside the local restaurant "Figlmüller", popular with tourists. - IANS
