Rains almost fill Hussainsagar Lake in Hyderabad
25-October-2013
Hussainsagar Lake in Hyderabad has reached near full tank level due to incessant rains lashing the city for last three days.
Authorities have alerted people living near the lake and also in colonies abutting the surplus outlet of the lake. Officials said if rains continued, water will be discharged.
Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has alerted people living near the lake to be prepared for possible evacuation.
Greater Hyderabad mayor Majid Hussain and GHMC Commissioner Somesh Kumar Friday visited the lake, which divides the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad.
They said the lake may receive more inflows, but added there was no need for any panic as GHMC was capable of tackling the situation. According to GHMC officials, the water level rose to 513.25 metres while FTL is 514 metres.
With the met office forecasting more rains, they have expressed apprehension that heavy rains might inundate colonies abutting Hussainsagar surplus outlet.
The GHMC has alerted colonies like Kavadigua, Arundhatinagar, Ambedkarnagar, Arvindanagar, Ratnanagar, Shivanandnagar and Dattanagar.
The water level in Musi River which flows through the city is also rising. The river is receiving huge inflows due to heavy rains in Nalgonda and Ranga Reddy districts.
The incessant rains inundated low-lying areas in Hyderabad and on the outskirts. Water entered into houses in some colonies in Hayatnagar, L. B. Nagar and Hayatnagar. The bus depot at Hayatnagar was also flooded.
Water logging on the roads led to traffic jams in several busy areas of the city. Motorists had a tough time wading through rain water on the main roads.
The rains also damaged roads in several parts of the city, adding to the woes of people. - IANS
