BKU 'liberates' traffic at Dasna toll bridge
03-December-2012
A day after stopping traffic at the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) Dasna toll bridge at Ghaziabad, Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) Sunday allowed traffic to pass through free of cost Sunday.
BKU Meerut division president Rajvir Singh said the toll on national highways was extortion from commuters.
"The government charges a lifetime road tax on vehicles at the time of registration. Even then, commuters are forced to pay toll tax," he said.
"The Dasna toll bridge does not keep a record of money it earns. We had liberated commuters at Meerut on National Highway-58 and at Bridge Ghat at National Highway-24. Now we have liberated commuters at Dasna in Ghaziabad," Singh said.
"Police cannot restore toll till the district magistrate empowers them. We are waiting for the district magistrate, who is out of town, to return," said Ran Vijay Singh, the area circle officer. - IANS
