Pedestrians are being run over by speeding vehicles as traffic police have removed several pedestrian crossings due to shortage of manpower.
Local residents said police have turned a deaf ear to their pleas to provide pedestrian crossings in spite of the growing number of accidents.
“There is a fish market and many residential colonies in the area. Several representations have been made to the police. But no action has been taken so far. They have stubbornly refused to provide a pedestrian crossing,” said Venkatesh.
Former Councillor K Sakthivel said there were no lights in the stretch when the accident took place this evening near Adyar Ananda Bhavan.
He blamed the local police for poor traffic management. – TWL Bureau
