One more fatal accident on Chennai ECR

A resident of Vettuvankeni on the East Coast Road (ECR) in Chennai, Gangan, aged about 40 years, died on the spot after being hit by an auto when he jumped over a median while attempting to cross the road.

The ECR has turned into a death trap with number of accidents being reported on the stretch between Thiruvanmyur and Uthandi.

Meeting death: A common  sight on ECR

Pedestrians are being run over by speeding vehicles as traffic police have removed several pedestrian crossings due to shortage of manpower.

Local residents said police have turned a deaf ear to their pleas to provide pedestrian crossings in spite of the growing number of accidents.

“There is a fish market and many residential colonies in the area. Several representations have been made to the police. But no action has been taken so far. They have stubbornly refused to provide a pedestrian crossing,” said Venkatesh.

Former Councillor K Sakthivel said there were no lights in the stretch when the accident took place this evening near Adyar Ananda Bhavan.

He blamed the local police for poor traffic management. – TWL Bureau
