Triple Talaq verdict: Centre to issue advisory to states, UTs
22-August-2017
The Union Home Ministry is likely to issue an advisory to all states and Union Territories in the wake of the Supreme Court's landmark judgment that struck down the practice of instant Triple Talaq, an official said on Tuesday.
The advisory would be issued on Wednesday or any other day this week to monitor the situation in different parts of the country, a Home Ministry official said requesting anonymity.
"An advisory will be issued to all the states and Union Territories with an instruction to keep watch on situation and take appropriate action. The decision was taken after the Supreme Court's order to strike down Triple Talaq," he said.
Chief Justice J.S. Khehar and Justice S. Abdul Nazeer, who constituted the minority view in the Triple Talaq verdict, ordered an injunction on the age-old practice at least for six months -- by when the government should consider steps to initiate legislation on the issue.
The apex court gave its judgment on a petition filed by Muslim woman Shayara Bano, who was joined by a Muslim group and four other women. - IANS
