We created buzz about women's cricket: Mithali Raj
01-August-2017
The Indian womens cricket team did not win the ICC World Cup but team captain Mithali Raj feels they created a buzz among people about womens cricket.
"Our team did well in the World Cup. I wouldn't say good because of the result but we have created a buzz about women's cricket in India among people. I am hoping it will be good times henceforth for women's cricket," she said.
The skipper was talking to reporters after a felicitation programme at the Pullela Gopichand Badminton Academy where she was presented a BMW car by Chamundeswarnath, Vice President of the Telangana Badminton Association.
"I did not expect this kind of reception despite losing the final. As a team we were all sad after the defeat in the final," she said.
"This appreciation and feedback from the Prime Minister to Chief Minister has been really nice because all these years nobody gave us acknowledgement.
"This time the matches were telecast live on television and social media. It created wider atmosphere and many people tweeted in support of the Indian team," she said.
Mithali thanked Chamundeswarnath. "I am truly honoured. This is a second car from him. He had given the first car in 2005 when the team was not even in the BCCI and nobody acknowledged us."
The Telangana government last week announced a cash award of Rs 1 crore and 600 square yard house site in Hyderabad's Banjara Hills area for her impressive performance in the World Cup. - IANS
