09-June-2017
Days after a Delhi University student was arrested and his juvenile accomplice detained for lynching an e-rickshaw driver near a metro station, police have arrested a third youth in the case.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Milind Mahadeo Dumbere told IANS that the third accused, Mehul Deda, 25, was arrested from north Delhi's Timarpur area on Thursday night.
Dumbere said the police is still searching for around 10 to 11 persons involved in the May 27 lynching and is hopeful of arresting them soon.
The incident shot to national attention after Union Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu said the e-rickshaw driver, Ravinder Kumar, was promoting "Swachh Bharat". He was killed by the youths after he objected to two of them urinating near the GTB Metro station in north Delhi.
Many leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, had condemned the lynching and urged the police to arrest the accused.
On May 29, Naidu visited the e-rickshaw driver's house and gave a cheque of Rs 50,000 to his family.
Later the same day, Modi and the Delhi government announced compensations of Rs one lakh and Rs five lakh respectively to Kumar's family. - IANS
