Mass Service Providers

We have a very poor image of Government machinery and people working there. But there are occasions when I have had a very different experience. I wish to place that on record. About 40 years ago, I had once posted an envelope containing a demand draft without writing the address of either the sender or the receiver by mistake. I realized my mistake only when my brother informed me that he had not received the DD. Of course, we took steps to instruct the Bank and made alternate arrangements to send money to my brother. But after a month, we were amazed to receive the original DD intact from the Postal Department. About eight years ago I made a feature about the RMS and met the Post Master General of Bangalore in that regard. I was simply awed by his sincerity and depth of knowledge. He was proud to be heading a department, which was part of one of the best Postal Services of the world. He told me how the Postal Department took so much of pain in securing the letters/parcels of their customers and how complaints against the department were taken very seriously and handled promptly. All this in a country where there are hundreds of languages and millions of people, who are not educated or who are not educated enough to even write addresses properly! Letters to even small vendors on the streets are handed over safely, as the postmen take that extra effort in knowing the local area and people more intimately. In many villages, the postman reads and writes letters for the local people and is seen with great respect. Every time I go to reserve a railway ticket, I admire the way the Railways have improved their services over the years from when I was a child to now. Reserving, cancelling or changing railway tickets was such a pain about twenty years ago. But today, all this is so simple and transparent. Of course, there are still a lot to be improved but we have to put on record whatever has been achieved so far, as Indian Railways is one of the biggest service providers of Asia and employs almost the maximum number of employees in the country. It is mind-blowing to think of the size of the industry and challenges of its administration! Another Government machinery that has impressed me is Doordarshan. We might now be able to watch hundreds of channels but there are a few programmes of good quality that are aired even today by Doordarshan which no other channel can boast of. Let’s protect such industries which work for the masses!
