In a jolt to the ruling Congress in Meghalaya ahead of the Tura Lok Sabha by-election, another veteran Congress leader and former education minister Manas Chaudhuri has quit the party.

The resignation followed the exit of another veteran Congress leader and former minister Frankenstein W. Momin from the party.

"I quit the Congress on May 4 as I was disillusioned with the inept manner in which the party was being run in the state," Chaudhuri told IANS.

He submitted his resignation to Meghalaya Congress president D.D. Lapang.

"The party is non-functional in the state and we will not win elections in this manner," he said.

The coming by-election was necessitated following the death of former Lok Sabha Speaker Purno A. Sangma on March 4.

Congress candidate Dikkanchi D. Shira, wife of Chief Minister Mukul Sangma, and NPP's Conrad K. Sangma, youngest son of the late P.A. Sangma, are the only two candidates in the election. - IANS
