CBI quizzes Mathew Samuel in Narada sting case

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) here on Monday again quizzed Narada News CEO Mathew Samuel in connection with the Narada sting tape case, an official said.

"I have come here because the CBI summoned me for certain clarifications regarding the probe. I cannot tell exactly what purpose they have called me for," Samuel said on reaching the CBI office in afternoon.

The CBI has questioned several people in the case, including senior IPS officer S.M.H. Mirza on June 6 and a number of Trinamool Congress MLAs, MPs and state ministers.

The central investigation agency lodged an FIR on April 17, 2017 against 13 people, including several ministers, Trinamool Congress MPs and Mirza, a month after the Calcutta High Court asked it to conduct a preliminary inquiry in the Narada sting footage case.

The CBI later registered an FIR after the preliminary probe revealed prima facie material for registration of a regular case relating to criminal conspiracy (Indian Penal Code 120B) and under several provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

The controversy erupted in the election-bound West Bengal in March 2016 when Narada News portal uploaded a video footage purportedly showing Trinamool leaders receiving money in exchange for promising favours to a fictitious company.IANS
