Andaman police seek clarification from journo in Jarawa dance video case

The Andaman police have sought the assistance of The Light of Andamans (LOA) Editor, Zubair Ahmed, who broke the story of some army men’s alleged involvement in the Jarawa dance video.

Andaman Superintendent of Police S B S Tyagi spoke to Zubair Tuesday and sought some information on the date in which the alleged incident is said to have taken place.

The LOA story said the video was shot on 6 November 2008 by some army personnel, who had come by two vehicles – a truck and a gypsy. The paper said the vehicles had crossed the check post at Middle Strait with special permission after the last convoy had left the point.

Vehicles are allowed to travel only in convoys on the Andaman Trunk Road (ATR), where the incident allegedly took place.

Talking to The Weekend Leader from  Port Blair, Tyagi said, the police have spoken to the women featured in the video and investigations are still in progress. “I can’t comment anything more at this stage,” he said.

It was the pregnant woman in the video, now identified as Enepowaiele, who has helped in fixing the year in which the video had been shot. The woman gave birth to a baby girl on 6 February 2009.

Whether Andaman police will be able to question the army men allegedly involved in the incident remains to be seen. - TWL Bureau
