Nitish Kumar government orders corrupt official’s home to be made into school

The war against corruption in Nitish Kumar led Bihar has reached a new level with the State government taking steps to set up a school in the confiscated property of a corrupt government official.

In December, the Bihar government passed orders to establish a school in the residence of a former motor vehicles inspector, Raghuvansh Kumar, following an order from a special court that was hearing a disproportionate assets case against the official.

The Special Court passed the order to confiscate Kumar’s property under provisions of the Bihar Special Courts Act 2009. The confiscated house is located at Chaira village in Samastipur district, about 70 Kms away from Patna.

State Human Resource Development Minister P K Shahi had issued instructions for setting up the school in the impounded property. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has been cracking down on rampant corruption in the State and had stated recently: “I am eagerly waiting for the day when the house of a corrupt official is confiscated and a school is opened in it.”

However, legal hurdles are delaying the process. “We have taken the decision to open the school and directed the officials concerned. But the decision has been challenged in the High Court and we are awaiting the final verdict over the matter,” says Shahi.

Lalit Kumar Rajak, District Education Officer of Samastipur district said he was aware about the case and was waiting for final order on the matter.

The whole country is awaiting the verdict, which may set a precedent for other States to follow.
